Aizawl: At least 23 girls from Nepal allegedly trafficked for flesh trade were rescued by Mizoram police, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

Mizoram Inspector General of Police (intelligence and law and order) LH Shanliana told EastMojo that the Nepali girls, believed to be victims of human trafficking, were rescued from Aizawl and Champhai near Myanmar border last week.

Producer and photojournalist Showkat Shafi, of Al Jazeera English Online, won a prestigious prize for his photography on Tuesday at the Drum Online Media Awards in London.

The prize, in the category of Best Use of Photography, was for Showkat's 100 Faces of Rohingya, a powerful curation highlighting the portraits of 100 Rohingya refugees, aged three to 95, who were part of some 730,000 Rohingya forced to flee into neighbouring Bangladesh by the Myanmar Army.

None of the Rohingyas want to be relocated to Bhasan Char

A total of 67% of the Rohingya refugee community currently living in Bangladesh are willing to return to their homes in Myanmar if the authorities there meet certain conditions, a Brac survey has found.

Brac found that none of the Rohingya population wants to be relocated to Bhashan Char either, from the refugee camps in Cox's Bazar where they are currently sheltered.

The Mizoram Police have rescued 31 teenage Nepali and Rohingya Muslim girls, suspected to be victims of human trafficking, an official said on Wednesday.

"Police last week rescued 23 Nepali and eight Rohingya Muslim girls. We suspect these girls, aged between 15 to 22 years, are victims of human trafficking," Inspector General of Mizoram Police (Law and Order), L.H. Shanliana, told IANS.

YANGON—The Myanmar military on Tuesday extended its unilateral ceasefire in five regional commands in Kachin and Shan states for two months on Tuesday, with restive Rakhine State remaining exempt from the truce.

Rights group urges Arakan Army to release 54 civilians

A human rights group in Chin State has called on the Arakan Army (AA) to release 54 ethnic Khumi people it seized more than three months ago.

The Khumi Affairs Coordination Council said the civilians were arrested by AA fighters at Kangtlang village in Paletwa township in Chin on February 2 and taken to the armed ethnic group’s base in Bangladesh in February.

It said the captives were forced to work at the camp and were not properly fed. It added that the families of the civilians were afraid for their health.

WASHINGTON -- Despite decades of efforts to combat it, religious persecution continues to be a widespread problem, according to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

In its annual report, released Monday, the independent, bipartisan agency accused 16 nations of engaging in or tolerating "particularly severe religious freedom violations."

The 16 countries with "systematic, ongoing and egregious" religious persecution include 10 already recognized as "countries of particular concern" by the U.S. State Department -- China, Pakistan, Iran, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Eritrea and Burma, plus two former Soviet states: Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Myanmar’s upstart Arakan Army (AA) has intensified its insurgent operations in recent months, opening a new front of instability in the nation’s long-running ethnic civil wars.

The armed conflict has compounded volatility in Rakhine state, from where over 700,000 Muslim Rohingya have been expelled in government “clearance operations” beginning in 2017 the United Nations and others suggest may have had “genocidal intent.”
