DHAKA: A top British official on Tuesday urged Myanmar’s authorities to ensure a safe environment for the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of persecuted Rohingya Muslims who fled the country since August 2017.

The district of Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh saw the arrival of nearly one million Rohingya refugees in 2017, a Muslim minority discriminated against in Myanmar for many decades. The majority of these refugees are concentrated today in the Kutupalong camp, a town with its wooden and bamboo shelters, where the literacy rate barely reaches 40%.

In February 2019, Libraries Without Borders, in collaboration with its partners, will install ten KoomBooks and five Ideas Boxes in the district of Cox’s Bazaar: four in the Rohingya refugee camps, and another near the host communities in the surrounding areas. Waiting for their arrival, our team set up workshops for Rohingya adolescents more than one month ago. Gaëlle Riboulet, a cultural mediator in Bangladesh, told us about two of them.

More than 700,000 Rohingya refugees crossed over to Bangladesh in 2017.

Visiting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Myanmar should take the responsibility and allow the Rohingya refugees to return as they are their citizens.

"We already have signed an agreement with the Myanmar government and they agreed to take them back. Unfortunately it did not happen. We could not implement it," said Hasina in an interview with Khaleej Times on Tuesday.

Japan will continue its support to Bangladesh in its bilateral efforts to repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Toshiko Abe said this during official talks with his Bangladesh counterpart Md Shahriar Alam in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He is paying a two-day visit to reiterate Japan’s efforts in resolving Rohingya crisis, the foreign ministry said.

Issues of bilateral relations were also discussed.

The Myanmar military on Tuesday denied an accusation by the rebel Arakan Army that it has been using passenger buses and cars to transport its troops in western Myanmar’s Rakhine state, where the two forces are fighting each other, a national army spokesman said.

The Arakan Army (AA) on Monday warned private bus companies in volatile Rakhine not to transport Myanmar soldiers, who it said were using private vehicles along with military trucks to move personnel into conflict zones, the online journal The Irrawaddy reported.
