Three suspected drug traders, including a Rohingya man, have been killed in separate reported gunfights in three different districts.

The incidents took place in the early hours of Wednesday.

In Jessore, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” during a turf war in Sharsha upazila.

The deceased, 26, has yet to be identified by the police.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Sharsha police station Sub Inspector (SI) Abul Hassan said: “Law enforcement received a tip off that a turf war gunfight was taking place in the Kunchemora area of the upazila early on Wednesday.

“Two police teams were dispatched to the area to investigate. Upon seeing law enforcement, the culprits escaped. Later: the body of the unidentified shot individual, two kilograms of marijuana, a locally-made gun, and a bullet were found in the area.”

The body of the deceased individual has been sent to the Jessore General Hospital morgue. SI Abul Hassan added that a case will be filed over the incident. Since January this year, four suspects have been killed in "gunfights" in Jessore.

In Cox's Bazar, a suspected Rohingya drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila.

The incident occurred at No 5 sluice gate of Sabrang union around 4am.

The deceased is Jafar Alam, 30, a resident of Teknaf's Nayapara Muchoni Rohingya camp.

Around 5,000 yaba pills and one locally-made gun were recovered from the spot.

Teknaf 2 BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md Asadud Zaman told the Dhaka Tribune: "We detained Jafar Alam on Tuesday night. After interrogation, we were informed that a large quantity of yaba was going to be smuggled into Bangladesh from Myanmar."

He said BGB brought Jafar Alam with them and waited for the smugglers to arrive in the area. When they confronted the smugglers from Myanmar, the smugglers opened fire on them, leaving two BGB members injured.

The BGB members fired back in self-defence, resulting in Jafar’s death.

"A case has been filed with Teknaf police station regarding the matter. The body has been handed over to Cox's Bazar Sadar model police station for autopsy."

In Dhaka, a suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Shyamoli.

The incident occurred around 6am.

The deceased, Mehedi, 32, had around 17 cases filed against him.

By text message, RAB 2 stated that they had been conducting an anti-drug drive in the area when the "gunfight" took place.

Furthermore, two RAB members were injured in the incident.

The elite force recovered foreign revolvers, bullets, and a large amount of heroin from the spot.
