President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Volkan Bozkir has said the basic rights, including to citizenship, and the creation of conditions conducive to the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of all Rohingyas must be respected.

"The safety and security of the Rohingya and other minorities must be secured," he said while delivering his keynote speech at the Sixth Lecture of the Bangabandhu Lecture Series at the Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON - Nearly four months after a coup in Myanmar triggered a prolonged period of violence and upheaval in the country, the Biden administration has designated Myanmar nationals for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), allowing many in the U.S. to be shielded from deportation and obtain work permits.

The registration period is set from May 25 to November 22. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that about 1,600 Burmese nationals "continuously residing" in the U.S. since March 11 now can obtain protected status.

Bangladesh is counting on the international community to pressure Myanmar into repatriating more than 1 million Rohingya refugees, after the Burmese junta chief said that Naypyidaw does not recognize them as citizens, a senior lawmaker told BenarNews, an RFA-affiliated online news service, on Tuesday.

In clips posted on social media a day earlier, Myanmar military chief Min Aung Hlaing was seen telling a Chinese television channel that his country would not repatriate people whom it does not consider as citizens under the law.

Faruk Khan, a Bangladeshi MP who chairs the parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, said he had heard these comments.

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo today denounced the attack by Myanmar’s army on innocent civilians—mostly women and children—who had taken refuge in a Catholic church in the village of Kayan Tharyar, four miles from Loikaw, capital of Kayah State, on Sunday May 23. The attack killed four people, injured at least 8 and displaced many people, according to Cardinal Bo.

 As the inimitable Shwedagon Pagoda blazed in the sun in all its glory, I blithely set about my morning stroll in Myanmar’s budding former capital, Yangon, scarcely expecting the impending cataclysm. It was the fateful early morning of February 1, when the country’s decade-long democratization progress screeched to a sudden halt. The sight of military vehicles inundating Yangon’s bustling morning traffic aroused in me an eerie sense of déjà vu vividly colored by the memories of Myanmar’s past crucibles.

New York, United States – A student leader during the 1988 uprisings against Myanmar’s previous military dictatorship, Nay Myint was imprisoned and tortured for his efforts.

“I gave a speech to the public about democracy, human rights and freedom. Shortly after, the military intelligence arrested me and then they gave me a life sentence. I stayed in the prison for 15 years, 10 years in solitary confinement,” he told Al Jazeera.

KNU Denies Military’s Accusation of Training Anti-Coup Groups

The Karen National Union has denied accusations made by Burma’s military regime, sent in a letter of complaint, claiming the KNU is conducting military training for opposition groups and anti-coup protesters.

The official letter, dated May 18, 2021, sent by the State Level Military Council to the KNU’s Liaison office in Hpa-an accused the KNU of providing military training to the groups outlawed by the Military Council. The groups named in the letter are: the anti-coup shadow government, National Unity Government (NUG) and its affiliates. The letter accused the KNU of holding trainings in its Brigade 1, 6 and 7.

Says BROUK; junta leader cast doubt on return of refugees

The genocide against the Rohingyas shows no sign of abating in Myanmar, the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) said in a new briefing yesterday.

It said the Myanmar military continues to subject the Rohingyas to a vicious pattern of abuse and extortion in the Rakhine State, where Rohingyas are kept in what amounts to an open-air prison, creating intolerable living conditions.

Since the start of this year, at least 15 Rohingya, including nine infants and young children, have died as a direct result of onerous and illegal travel restrictions preventing access to medical care, said BROUK President Tun Khin in a statement.

"This would be another example to the world on how to deal with refugees," he said in a joint media briefing at Foreign Service Academy.

The UNGA President said he could not visit Bhasan Char but he saw a video on Bhasan Char and acknowledged the high-level works in Bhasan Char including precautions and safety measures.

Rising COVID-19 infections in squalid refugee camps force authorities to impose lockdown

Bangladesh has sought COVID-19 vaccines and other related support for Rohingya refugees in the country from the UN and other donor agencies, said an official on Monday.

Shah Rezwan Hayat, head of the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), told Anadolu Agency that they have requested the UN Refugee Agency and held meetings with the World Health Organization to initiate a vaccination campaign for the refugees in the southern district of Cox's Bazar.
