GENEVA, 3 May 2019 – This week, UNICEF inaugurated the 2,000th learning center in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh. More than 180,000 children are now learning in the 2,000 UNICEF-supported learning centres, taught by 4,000 teachers who have been trained by UNICEF partners. These children are aged between 4 to 14 years.

Bangladesh has renewed calls for an early start of repatriation of the Rohingya refugees and urged Myanmar to remove all barriers preventing commencement of their return.

The request was made at the fourth meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on the repatriation of displaced Myanmar residents from Bangladesh to Myanmar held in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.

4 Rohingyas detained at Dhaka airport

Four Rohingya people including three women were detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka today while attempting to fly to Indonesia.

Tipped off, a team of Airport Police detained the four from the outdoor around 11:00am, Airport Police’s Additional Superintendent Alamgir Hossian told The Daily Star.

Detainees Anwar, 30, Rokeya, 19, Marijan, 23, and Amena Begum, 26, were attempting to fly to Indonesia via Malaysia by a flight of a Malaysian Airlines at noon.

They are the residents of Maungdaw in Rakhine State of Myanmar but they were bearing Bangladeshi passports, the police official said.

Legal actions will be taken against them, he added.

Bangladesh, US hold dialogue on security, ‘key component’ of ties

The seventh episode of the ‘security dialogue’ between the Bangladesh and the United States has noted that security cooperation is a “key component” in bilateral cooperation, the foreign ministry says.

Director General, Americas Wing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ferdousi Shahriar and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of the Political Military Affairs, US State Department Michael F Miller led the respective side in the dialogue held in Dhaka on Thursday.

Bangladesh has pressed Myanmar on early start of physical repatriation of the Rohingya refugees during a top bilateral meeting.

Attitude reflects Myanmar’s unwillingness to take its people back, say officials

Several thousand Rohingyas have been languishing inside Myanmar since the latest influx that started in August, 2017, but they are not allowed back home by their own border police.

Expert says Rohingya issue ignored for many reasons, citing in particular Myanmar's alliance with several countries

ANKARA

The world is ignoring the Rohingya crisis for several reasons, said an NGO leader in Canada on Friday, citing in particular the alliance of Myanmar's government with China, India, Israel, and Russia as well as the global climate of Islamophobia.

"Both India and China have a strategic economic interest in Myanmar. The Myanmar government recently agreed to the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) agreement, which is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative," Yuriko Cowper-Smith, a board member at the NGO Canadian Rohingya Development Initiative (CRDI), told Anadolu Agency.

Myanmar's army has said it shot dead at least six people detained in a village school in Rakhine state.

A spokesman confirmed troops fired on unarmed detainees saying they had tried to grab the soldiers' weapons.

The detained were being questions for links to the rebels of the Arakan Army, who are ethnic Rakhine Buddhists.

Six people were killed and eight others injured during a disturbance at a school compound where hundreds of villagers were being detained by government forces in a village in Rathedaung township, Rakhine State, a senior spokesman of the Tatmadaw (military) said on Thursday.

Brigadier General Zaw Min Tun said the casualties happened before dawn on Thursday when some detainees crowded around the police officers guarding them, and the police fired warning shots to stop them.
