The police on Friday alerted their units in Cox’s Bazar and tightened checkpoints in the capital’s Gulshan and Baridhara diplomatic areas after the extremist attack in mosques in New Zealand that left at least 49 people, including three Bangladeshis, killed.

The police officials said that they always kept their force on alert but additional precaution was prescribed as soon as the shooting incident in mosques was reported in the media.

The San Diego Diplomacy Council hosted one of the 2019 Secretary of State International Women of Courage Awardees. Naw K'nyaw Paw is a human rights activist from Burma who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and courage. Her organisation was the first, and one of the few, in Burma to publicly condemn the military-led violence against the Rohingya people.

Last month the United Nations and its partners appealed for US$920 million ($1.34 billion) to assist nearly one million Rohingya refugees now encamped in Bangladesh. These refugees are fleeing the violence in the northern part of the Rakhine state in Burma. That violence has been perpetrated by the Burmese military under the pretext that the Rohingya are not citizens of Burma, also known as Myanmar, but "resident foreigners" from Bangladesh who neither speak the Burmese language nor are part of Burma's myriad ethnic groups.
