NGAPALI BEACH, Myanmar (Reuters) - Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi called for investment in the crisis-hit western state of Rakhine on Friday, saying the world had “focused narrowly on negative aspects” in the state from which some 730,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled since 2017.

On a rare visit to Rakhine, Suu Kyi emphasized responsible business practices as she addressed an investment fair sponsored by Japan in the coastal state’s tourist hotspot of Ngapali beach.

NEW DELHI (Bernama) -- Shabbily dressed and barefoot children extended their little hands to receive packets of biscuits while women gathered to receive bags of foodstuffs.

The children, smiling and displaying an innocence disconnected with the reasons behind their misery, ran towards a group of Malaysian diplomats visiting their desolated Rohingya refugee camp in New Delhi.

It was a small gesture of aid made by some members of the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service Association (PPTD) through the High Commission of Malaysia.

The Rakhine State parliament on Wednesday turned down a motion submitted by Tatmadaw (military) MP Major Thet Oo Maung urging the state government to win public support for the military.

Twenty-two Rakhine lawmakers rejected the motion, while 11 supported it, according to MP U Kyaw Lwin.

Minister: Rohingya rights must remain on agenda.

Dhaka: The plight of the Rohingya refugees to return home must not fall off the international agenda and they must be given justice, she said, according to a press release issued yesterday by the British High Commission in Dhaka.

She said the international community must make sure that Rohingyas’ right to return remains high on the agenda.

Mordaunt, also the UK’s minister for women and equalities, arrived in Dhaka on Sunday on a three-day official visit. On Monday, she met Rohingya refugees at a food distribution centre in Kutupalong camp of Cox’s Bazar.

A Rohingya man, who had been detained as a drug suspect, has been killed during an alleged gun battle involving the Border Guards Bangladesh in Cox’s Bazar.

The deceased Zafar Alam lived in Noyapara Muchni Rohingya refugee camp at Heela Union, said Lt Col Md Asadud-Zaman Chowdhury, head of Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion, on Wednesday.

The incident of gunfight took place at No. 5 Sluice Gate in Sabrang, he said.

YANGON — The Kayah State government has dropped its lawsuits against all 55 people charged over the past year for protesting against the installation of a statue of late independence hero Gen. Aung San in Loikaw, the state capital.

Khun A Than, a member of the Karenni Youth Force, a local civil society group, said the Demoso Township Court on Friday dropped its cases against those charged under Section 505 (b) and (c) of the Penal Code for defamation. He said on Wednesday the Loikaw Township Court dropped its cases against those charged under Section 19 and 20 of the Peaceful Assembly and Procession Law.
