The Rakhine State parliament on Wednesday turned down a motion submitted by Tatmadaw (military) MP Major Thet Oo Maung urging the state government to win public support for the military.

Twenty-two Rakhine lawmakers rejected the motion, while 11 supported it, according to MP U Kyaw Lwin.

“It was decided by a vote, and the Tatmadaw lost,” he added.

Earlier the government urged the Rakhine people not to support the outlawed Arakan Army, which has engaged in deadly skirmishes with the military recently.

Maj Thet Oo Maung’s proposal said, “The Tatmadaw is always thinking about The Three Duties of protecting citizens’ safety, religion and race, so the state government is urged to actively seek the support of the Rakhine people to cooperate with the Tatmadaw.”

State MPs, including from the Arakan National Party and National League for Democracy, opposed the proposal, said U Tun Thar Sein, state MP for Mrauk-U township.

“People wouldn’t accept this. The military needs to seek public support if it wants the public to cooperate. We are elected representatives, so we opposed it in line with the public’s desire,” said U Kyaw Lwin.

The military and Arakan Army have clashed in Rathedaung and Mrauk-U townships in Rakhine and Paletwa township in Chin State.
