IFRC identifies six lakh now exposed to cyclone risks
An estimated 574,000 Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar are exposed to extreme weather conditions, and their battered camps need sturdier structures that can resist cyclones and other forms of disasters they are going to face this monsoon season, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has said.

600,000 Rohingyas ‘exposed’ to cyclone risks: IFRC

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has said an estimated 574,000 people in Cox's Bazar Rohingya will face the coming cyclone seasons with only rotting bamboo and shredding plastic to protect them, reports UNB.

After 18 months, it said, housing conditions have dramatically deteriorated, leaving people "worryingly exposed".

Fearing detention and deportation, Rohingya refugees flee to Bangladesh.

“Those who reach Bangladesh are lucky, but the conditions of those who are caught at the border are really bad,” Mohammed Shaker, a Rohingya resident of a refugee camp in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area, told me. The Rohingyas are an ethnic Muslim minority from Myanmar who have been rendered stateless by the Myanmar’s military’s campaign of ethnic cleansing against them. Since 2008, at least forty thousand Rohingyas have fled to India to escape persecution by the Myanmar government. But the thousands of Rohingya refugees are now looking at the bleak prospect of a second displacement, fleeing to Bangladesh to escape hostile conditions in India.

Some 102 Bangladeshi meth dealers have surrendered to authorities at a pre-scheduled ceremony in a coastal town, officials said Saturday, as a Philippines-style anti-narcotics crackdown sows fear among kingpins.

Bangladesh last year launched a "war" on drugs following a proliferation of illegal substances in the South Asian nation of 165 million people, mostly of cheap methamphetamine pills known as "yaba".

The United States and European Union have announced additional funding of $60 million and €24 million ($27 million) respectively as humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya refugees.

The announcement came at the launch of the 2019 UN Joint Response Plan for Bangladesh in Geneva on February 15.
