The Arakan or the Rakhine state of Myanmar is a close neighbour of Bangladesh and has been so in the past. With the influx of the Rohingyas, this state has placed Bangladesh in a worrisome predicament. The Arakan Army is a significant political and military factor there. General Twan Mrat Naing is the commander in chief of the Arakan Army. On 19 December, he spoke over Zoom from the Chin state to three journalists and researchers of Bangladesh on the situation in Arakan and Myanmar.

Three years ago, the Kyaw Thaung family partied at the Pegu Club. The venerable Burmese-Irish clan had restored the teak-lined establishment to its 19th-century glory, evoking the days when gin-sipping colonialists ruled. The Pegu Club project befitted the family’s East-meets-West positioning and the optimism of a country newly engaging with the world.

Amid periodic power cuts in the rest of Yangon, the Kyaw Thaungs danced and sipped champagne among the new elite, including young entrepreneurs returned from exile, bejeweled daughters of generals, and even former political prisoners suddenly responsible for attracting foreign investment to the latest frontier market.

ရိုဟင်ဂျာတွေ လိုက်ပါလာတဲ့ စက်လှေကိုတော့ တနင်္ဂနွေနေ့က ဒေသခံငါးဖမ်းသမားတွေက ကမ်းကနေ မိုင် ၆၀ လောက်အကွာမှာ စတွေ့ခဲ့တာဖြစ်ပြီး အမျိုးသမီး ၆၀ ကလေးငယ် ၅၁ ယောက်နဲ့ အမျိုးသား ၉ ယောက် လိုက်ပါ လာတာပါ။ သူတို့ဟာ လှေစက်မပျက်ခင်က ပင်လယ်ထဲ ၂၈ ရက်ကြာ နေခဲ့ရကြောင်းနဲ့ သူတို့မလေးရှားကို သွား ချင်ကြောင်းပြောကြပါတယ်။

JAKARTA: A boat carrying scores of Rohingya refugees including women and children broke down and was stranded in waters off the coast of Aceh province on Indonesia's Sumatra island, local authorities and humanitarian groups said on Monday (Dec 27).

Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have for years sailed to countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia between November and April when the seas are calm.

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Monday the boat carrying the Rohingya was spotted on Sunday in waters off Bireuen, Aceh and it was working with local authorities to rescue the group.

Dozens of Rohingya refugees who were intercepted after their boat ran into trouble off the coast of Indonesia’s Aceh province were being sent into Malaysian waters, authorities said.

At least 100 people, mostly women and children, on board a wooden vessel said to be taking on water were denied refuge in Indonesia and instead pushed into the neighbouring Southeast Asian country.

The news coverage of Myanmar over the past several months has led many people to conclude that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of the country, has abandoned her responsibility to protect human rights. Hundreds of thousands of people from the Rohingya ethnic minority are being expelled by the military from lands in western Myanmar, where they have lived for centuries. By any standard, we are witnessing the most fundamental violations of human rights.
