Official figure of Rohingya Muslims, who fled Myanmar military crackdown with genocidal intent, in 2017 and now living in the world's largest refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, will cross 800,000 once Saudi Arabia deports around 50,000 Rohingyas to Bangladesh.

During the crackdown thousands were killed, women raped and their houses burnt to ashes. The total number of Rohingyas living at the refugee camp and many other makeshift shelters in the Cox's Bazar and the adjacent Bandarban districts has crossed 1,100,000 with those who had fled Myanmar following Muslim-Buddist communal riots in 2012.

Saudi Arabia wants to send the Rohjngyas back to Bangladesh as they entered into the Kingdom using Bangladesh passports and pretending as Bangladeshi nationals in the recent past.

Long before August 2017, there were Rohingya refugees who lived in camps in Cox's Bazar, who had left Myanmar decades ago.

Arman, now in his mid-20s, was born and raised in these camps. His parents were among those who fled Myanmar in the early 1990s, and were recognised as refugees by the Bangladesh government and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). These "registered" Rohingya refugees, numbering around 35,000 continue to live in the camps, nearly 30 years on. Their children tend to be almost entirely socially integrated—speaking Bangla fluently (in addition to their native Rohingya). Bangladesh is the only home they have ever known.

At the end of last year, the Rohingya crisis gained renewed international attention when the Gambia faced off against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice over the genocide committed against my people.

It was a deeply historic and important moment, which was even watched in the refugee camps for displaced Rohingya in which I live in Bangladesh. Yet, as important as it was to see my former idol Aung San Suu Kyi in The Hague, this was a struggle between second and third parties, overshadowing developments that have been occurring within the Rohingya community itself.

Taslima was dreading the day. It was SweTinSit, an annual population census conducted by Myanmar government officials in northern Rakhine state. Military, police and customs officials would be sweeping through, collecting data on Rohingya families – monitoring the birth of children, photographing family members and listing their names. This was in 2016, when tensions in Rakhine were escalating.

Speakers at a programme here on Thursday urged the global community to play a stronger role for the sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to their place of origin in Rakhine state of Myanmar.

While addressing the panel discussion titled ‘Rohingya: The Need for Justice and Rights in Rakhine 2020’ at the Brac Centre Inn, they also called for imposing strict economic sanctions on Myanmar and putting pressure on its military to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

Indonesian investment sought to remove trade imbalance with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has urged Indonesia to remain pro-active in the Asean platform to convince Myanmar for creating a conducive environment for a safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas.

Foreign Minister DR AK Abdul Momen discussed the issue when Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh Rina Prihtyasmiarsi Soemarno met him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

Dr Momen suggested that an Asean-led observer team may be deployed in Rakhine State to oversee the repatriation process.

When his village in the Buthidaung township in Myanmar’s Rakhine State burned down during the violent clashes between local Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims that began in 2012, Tobarik Hason and his younger sister fled.

“The situation was chaotic. We were running... and we were separated from the rest of our family. A few days later, we found our way to Maungdaw [another town in Rakhine],” the 19-year-old said.

Bashan Char either could be resort or place of homeless, says FM

Floating an alternative idea for Bashan Char, an island in Noakhali district, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday said it could either be a resort or good place for homeless people instead of relocating Rohingyas there.

“We can think of an alternative instead of sending Rohingyas there. This is my personal thinking and there has been no decision from the government yet,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sharing his experience of recent visit to Bashan Char, Dr Momen said this is a very beautiful place having a nice lake and other facilities. “So beautiful place it is!”
