Myat Win Kyaw - Since Myanmar isn’t a signatory to the Rome Statute, it doesn’t have an obligation to respect and follow the rules of the International Criminal Court (ICC), said U Hau Do Suan, the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York.

According to Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, U Hau Do Suan made the statement during the 26th session of the 74th United Nations General Assembly on October 4 while the 2018-19 report of the ICC was being discussed.

BANGKOK (AP) – After facing international outrage and charges of ethnic cleansing, Myanmar made a pledge: Rohingya Muslims who fled the country by the hundreds of thousands would start their journey home within weeks.

With so many obstacles, however, and no real sign of good will, few believe that will happen.

The returns are supposed to be voluntary. But many members of the religious minority, now living in sprawling refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh, are afraid to go back.

Ko Shafique walked across Myanmar for 18 days, hiding in the jungle during the day to avoid detection.

His family had agreed to pay K4 million – the equivalent of more than US$2,500 –to traffickers so he could join his brothers in Malaysia.

IORA declines Myanmar membership due to Bangladesh’s opposition

DHAKA, Nov 7, 2019 (BSS) -Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), an organisation of 22 member states and nine dialogue partners, has declined Myanmar’s membership application as Bangladesh strongly opposed the move for its non-cooperation to repatriate Rohingyas.

Myanmar again applied for membership of IORA during the 21st IORA Council of Senior Officials’ (CSO) Meeting held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, on November 5-6.

The United States has said it looks forward to the UN technical study of Bhasan Char, which will evaluate its "technical, security, and financial" feasibility to serve as an additional locale for Rohingyas.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick and acting assistant secretary of State Alice G Wells who wrapped up their three-day on Thursday evening, discussed the Rohingya issue and ways to find a sustainable solution during their stay here.

Japan stands by the Rohingyas for ensuring their early repatriation to Myanmar, said newly-appointed Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Naoki Ito.

Last week, the Asia-Pacific Centre for the Responsibility to Protect released its 2019 risk assessment of Myanmar. The assessment uses a structured framework to determine the likelihood of atrocity crimes such as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in order to assist policymakers to develop targeted prevention measures. It found that all eight risk factors for atrocity crimes and the two risk factors specifically pertaining to genocide were present in Myanmar.

The assessment echoes a report issued by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar in September that warned that ‘the Rohingya people remain at serious risk of genocide’.
