Rohingya Crisis: Japan for peaceful solution

Japan stands by the Rohingyas for ensuring their early repatriation to Myanmar, said newly-appointed Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Naoki Ito.

“I would like to emphasize that Japan and its people would not hesitate to extend our hands to all those who are suffering from the situation, and stand with them with the view of realizing early repatriation to Myanmar in a safe, voluntary and dignified manner,” he said in a statement, following a visit to Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.

The situation surrounding people in the camps he has visited is “extremely severe”, he said, referring to around a million Rohingyas living in crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar. Of them, some 750,000 fled a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since late August 2017.

Ito expressed his gratitude and respect to the staff members of international organisations and NGOs, who devote themselves to help the displaced persons under such “severe condition”.

Japan, which has provided some $99.2 million as humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas and host communities, wants a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Rohingya crisis.
