Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi scolds world for lacking focus on Rakhine 'terrorists'

YANGON (AFP) - Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has bemoaned the lack of global scrutiny on extremism and "terrorists" inside Rakhine state, where her country's army stands accused of committing genocide against Rohingya Muslims.

The comments from the Nobel laureate are part of a longstanding defence of the army campaign against the Rohingya, which drove nearly three-quarters of a million of the minority into Bangladesh in 2017.
That campaign brought US sanctions on key military figures and allegations of genocide by United Nations investigators.

BAKU, Azerbaijan: As a counter to Israel's claim of Jerusalem as its capital and western countries support of it, Malaysia will open an embassy accredited to Palestine.

The embassy, to be located in Jordan will enable Malaysia to provide the much needed support and assistance to embattled Palestine.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced this today when addressing delegates at the 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement currently being held at the Baku Congress Centre.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has discussed the Rohingya refugee crisis with her Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

She met them separately on the sidelines of the 18th NAM Summit in Azerbaijan capital Baku on Friday.

Mahathir assured her of cooperation in resolving the crisis and holding those to accounr for “genocide of the Muslim ethnic minority in Myanmar”, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told the press.

Religious rights advocacy won’t save the Rohingya—but what will?

To insist on the Rohingya status as a victimized religious minority while ignoring other factors cements their position as outsiders, fueling exclusionary forms of both politics and religion.

International human rights advocates who want to help the Rohingya and other persecuted groups are not furthering their causes by seeing religious violence behind every corner. In the case of the Rohingya, advocates should stop fostering the narrative of religious intolerance and instead insist that the Burmese government treat the Rohingya as human beings, and as legitimate citizens of Myanmar, worthy of dignity and respect.

For decades, the Rohingya have been denied citizenship by the Burmese state, which falsely classifies them as Bengali immigrants and subjects them to discrimination and scorn. Now the military is undertaking what UN high commissioner for human rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein calls “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” The United Nations has described the situation as catastrophic.

This year, the USA gave $274 million

While a request for $920 million was made to carry on the humanitarian aid for the Rohingyas, so far 60% has come thru, with the most from the United States of America.

This year alone, the US gave around $274 million.

The Rohinghya exodus began on Aug 25, 2017 when a large number of people came to Bangladesh to avert a crackdown by the Myanmar army.
