(New York) – Myanmar authorities should independently investigate the killing of detainees held by the military in Rakhine State, Human Rights Watch said today. On May 2, 2019, army soldiers shot and killed at least six villagers from among several hundred who had been detained in Kyauk Tan, Rathedaung township, for suspected links to the Arakan Army, an ethnic Rakhine armed group.

Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees in camps across Bangladesh are at imminent risk of El Niño-related drought this year.

The refugees are living on the steep, deforested slopes of sand and clay in the Kutupalong-Balukhali camps located in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar. Thousands of hand-built tarpaulin and bamboo shelters are threatened by strong winds and cyclones during the monsoon season and now they face the added danger of drought.

The Myanmar military, or Tatmadaw, on Friday said they have released 126 innocent civilians out of 275 villagers from Rathedaung Township in northern Rakhine State whom they have held in detention for three days on suspicion of having ties with the Arakan Army (AA). The military also reiterated that it would take action against those who they claim are either AA members or have affiliations with the group.

YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar police had two Reuters journalists behind bars, but they wanted more.

The reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, were lured into a meeting with police in December 2017 and arrested on claims of violating state secrecy laws as they reported on atrocities against the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

OTTAWA — A Senate motion will urge the Liberal government to meet Canada’s international treaty obligations by holding Myanmar accountable for its treatment of the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is hypocritical, say some, for making regretful statements about historical events such as the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide but failing to do more to stop what Parliament has unanimously acknowledged as an ongoing genocide.
