Myanmar soldiers and rebel Arakan Army troops exchanged fire for four hours Monday morning near Ohn Chaung village in restive Rakhine state’s Rathedaung township, with soldiers returning with border guards later in the day to search and loot homes, residents said.

UNICEF boss urges Myanmar to enact Kofi Annan’s recommendations on Rohingya crisis

YANGON (Reuters) - The head of the U.N. children’s fund urged Myanmar on Monday to implement the recommendations of a panel on the Rohingya crisis led by former U.N. head Kofi Annan, saying it had yet to create conditions right for the return of refugees from Bangladesh.

 Speaking at a forum in the capital, Naypyitaw, UNICEF executive director Henrietta Fore said children from the Rohingya Muslim minority, a persecuted and mostly stateless community from Buddhist-majority Myanmar, were living “a precarious and an almost hopeless existence” in camps in neighbouring Bangladesh.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) - A U.N. human rights envoy said that hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees won't be able to return to Myanmar soon because of threats to their safety in the Buddhist-majority nation.

Myanmar has been criticized by global rights groups and many nations for state-sponsored violence against ethnic minorities.

The United Nations is again warning that Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh cannot be sent back to Myanmar, because it is not safe.

The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, who has been visiting Bangladesh, says the crisis could have global consequences.

Al Jazeera's Natasha Ghoneim reports from Dhaka.

A top UN official on Friday urged Saudi Arabia not to deport members of the persecuted Rohingya community to Bangladesh but instead to grant them refugee status, Anadolu Agency reports.

“I am dismayed by Saudi Arabia’s recent deportation of 13 Rohingya to Bangladesh,” said Yanghee Lee, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, at a news briefing in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.
