Bangladesh seeks proactive role from Thailand, ASEAN

Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen on Sunday sought a pro-active role from Thailand in particular, and from the ASEAN in general, for ensuring an expeditious and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya people to their homeland in Myanmar.

Momen also requested participation of the Thai foreign minister and deputy prime minister at the Indian Ocean Rim Association Ministerial meeting in Dhaka next month.

The issues were discussed when visiting permanent secretary-designate of Thailand Sarun Charoensuwan met Momen at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

During the meeting, they exchanged warm greetings on the occasion of the 50 years of diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and Thailand, which is being celebrated on both sides with fervour and enthusiasm.

The Rohingya people forced out of the homeland remain at the mercy of the geopolitics of host countries in the region, with potentially worrying implications. 

Bangladesh faces an election in 2023 and the issue of the Rohingya is seen as important for the government to allay concerns of its electorate about the sustainability of meeting the needs of such a large refugee population, and also perceived frictions with locals.

The Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has launched a crackdown against suspected criminals and insurgents after a rise in attacks on Rohingya community leaders in refugee camps, officers said Sunday.

The police, tasked with security in 34 refugee camps which are home to nearly one million Rohingya refugees, said they have arrested at least 56 Rohingyas since Friday night.

Beijing will ask Myanmar to stop violation of Bangladesh's territorial sovereignty and speed up the tripartite mechanism for early Rohingya repatriation.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming made the assurance during a meeting with acting foreign secretary Admiral (retd) Khurshed Alam at the foreign ministry today (September 26, 2022).

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Jiming said the recent incidents on the border are unfortunate.

He said they discussed ways for early repatriation of Rohingya refugees, recent incidents along Bangladesh-Myanmar border, and bilateral cooperation in other areas.

Amid nearly three-month-long unrest along the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar, the border forces of the two South Asian neighbors on Sunday held a commander-level meeting to resolve the prevailing tension.

A seven-member team of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) attended the flag meeting held in Bangladesh’s southern border town of Tekhnaf while an eight-member squad of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) represented the host country, according to a BGB statement.

Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) at the flag meeting has expressed sincere regret for all the recent incidents that took place in the Bangladesh-Myanmar border areas.

Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Khalid Mohammad Iftekhar, commanding officer of BGB-2 Battalion came up with the devolvement after the BGB-BGP flag meeting in Teknaf in Cox's Bazar today (October 30, 2022) over the recent tensions in border areas, reports our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent.

During the meeting, the two sides expressed their firm determination to perform their respective duties in a bid to maintain and peace and order, and the security of the people living in the border areas, Lt Col Iftekhar said at a press conference at the office of BGB-2 Battalion in Teknaf.

A three-member Myanmar military council delegation led by lieutenant general Phone Myat met with the Bangladesh chief of the defense staff general SM Shafiuddin Ahmed at Bangladesh Army Headquarters on 26 October last.

Both the generals discussed various issues related to the development of military ties between the two neighbouring countries including the exchange of high-ranking military officers. Phone Myat urged the Bangladesh authority to cooperate in joint natural disaster managementand sharing of relevant information.

Bangladesh Army has asked the Myanmar Army to maintain more caution in conducting its operations along the common border areas.

A three member delegation of Myanmar Army led by Lt Gen Phone Myat, Command Bureau of Special Operation visited Bangladesh Army Chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed at the Army Headquarters on October 26, according to a press release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued on Thursday night.

The delegation highlighted the ongoing security situation in Myanmar during the visit apart from exchanging courtesies. It said they are trying to keep their country's peace and discipline under control while maintaining mutual friendship with Bangladesh.

A three-member delegation of Myanmar army met Bangladesh Army in Dhaka, in a new turn of development, when the two sides discussed working on regional peace and security and quick repatriation of the Rohingyas.

Bangladesh Army reminded the Myanmar Army of maintaining caution while conducting any campaign in the bordering areas.
