YANGON: Myanmar’s military on Thursday rejected an International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor’s call for a full investigation into alleged crimes against Rohingya Muslims.

Fatou Bensouda launched a preliminary probe in September into the 2017 crackdown by Myanmar’s military that forced some 740,000 Rohingya over the border into Bangladesh with accounts of rape, mass killings and razing of villages.

OTTAWA — The Trudeau government is facing mounting pressure from across the country to take more international action to hold Myanmar to account for the genocide of the Rohingya people.

Thirty-four senators and more than 100 human-rights organizations and advocates sent a joint letter to Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland this week urging Canada to initiate proceedings before the International Court of Justice for breaching the United Nations convention against genocide.

International court forms bench to look into request for probing Myanmar's deportation of Rohingya Muslims

A Rohingya group Thursday called for an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into Myanmar’s crimes against humanity after an ICC prosecutor announced her intent to submit a request to probe deportation of Rohingya Muslims.

The ICC said that it assigned a three-judge panel to hear prosecutor Fatou Bensouda’s request to open an investigation into the Rohingyas' deportation from Myanmar.

The reforestation program in 2019 will span across 500 acres inside the camps

The Energy and Environment Technical Working Group (EETWG), comprised of UN agencies and NGOs, has launched reforestation activities in the Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camps.

This year, members of the group will complete reforestation activities over 500 acres inside the camp, said a press release issued on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told parliament that the security and stability of Bangladesh may be hampered if the displaced Rohingyas cannot be repatriated soon.
In reply to a question from Awami League MP Nur Mohammad from Kishoreganj-2, the premier said, “If we can’t send the displaced Rohingyas back soon, there is an apprehension that our security and stability will be hampered.”

On June 26, the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced that Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda will request that the court’s judges open an investigation into crimes relating to two waves of violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Myanmar is not an ICC member. But last year, the court confirmed its jurisdiction over crimes where an element occurred in Bangladesh, an ICC member since June 2010.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on Wednesday moved closer to opening a full investigation into alleged crimes against the Rohingya people who were driven from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said in a statement she would ask judges for permission to investigate crimes that had “at least one element” in Bangladesh, which is a member of the ICC.

She added that her investigation would cover crimes that also took place “within the context of two waves of violence in Rakhine State on the territory of” Myanmar.

SITTWE—A resident of the village of Pauk Taw Pyin in Rakhine State’s Maungdaw Township died while being taken to a hospital by the Myanmar military (or Tatmadaw) on Tuesday, four days after soldiers arrested him.

Family members said they only became aware of the man’s death after his body arrived at Kyauktaw Township Hospital.

Yanghee Lee, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, has been an outspoken critic of Myanmar’s powerful military and its brutal crackdowns on Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state in 2016 and 2017. She has called for the prosecution of those responsible for committing suspected acts of genocide against the Rohingya, and blasted the armed forces for their treatment of other ethnic minorities in conflict zones in Kachin and northern Shan states. In late 2017, the Myanmar government barred Lee from visiting the country to assess the rights situation after it said a previous mission report she issued was biased and unfair.
