Following the conclusion of the 34th ASEAN Summit last weekend in Bangkok, Thailand, it came as no surprise that the bloc was heavily criticised for suggesting Rohingya refugees will repatriate back to Myanmar within two years.

It’s been nearly two years since 671,000 Rohingya fled violence and persecution in Myanmar for the safety of Cox’s Bazar, near the south eastern tip of Bangladesh.

Between August and October 2017 they joined more than 200,000 Rohingya displaced over the previous 20 years, with around one million of these displaced people now living in Bangladesh.

GENEVA (Reuters) - Myanmar’s army may be committing gross human rights violations under cover of a mobile phone blackout in parts of Myanmar’s Rakhine and Chin states, U.N. special rapporteur Yanghee Lee said on Monday.

Lee, an independent expert who reports to the U.N. Human Rights Council on human rights in Myanmar, said nine townships had been blacked out, with no media access and serious restrictions on humanitarian organizations.

“I fear for all civilians there,” Lee said in a statement.

Three individuals identified by local authorities as “Bengalis” were arrested in the Chin State border town of Rihkhawdar on Tuesday as they tried to enter the country from India’s Mizoram State.

The arrest was made by a combined force of Rihkhawdar immigration and police officials shortly after the two women and one man crossed the border about 200 meters north of the town’s India-Burma Friendship Bridge. The authorities were waiting for them there after receiving a tipoff.

Malaysia on Saturday said the perpetrators of violence against Myanmar’s Rohingya minority must “be brought to justice”, in sharp comments delivered at a normally tame regional summit.

Myanmar does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens, instead officially labeling them “Bengalis”, short-hand for illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh.

Repatriation of Rohingyas would be the top priority issue during prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to China in the first week of July, foreign minister AK Abdul Momen said on Sunday.

‘Beginning repatriation of Rohingya people [to Myanmar] would be a top priority,’ he told journalists at his office, adding, ‘we’ll continue to say they should go.’

The minister said that China would support the signing arrangements with Myanmar to begin the repatriation process.

Police detained a Rohingya woman and a middleman for applying for a passport with fake documents at the Narsingdi regional passport office on Sunday afternoon.

Yasmin Akhter, 20, with the help of Iman Ali, 40, applied for a passport with fake documents, said Assistant director of Narsingdi regional passport office, Shahjahan Kabir.

“The views of the Rohingya must be sought before the repatriation of the refugees as they are living in fear.

Dhaka, June 23 (UNB) – Bangladesh will convey its fear of ”radicalism and uncertainty” in the region on security front to China due to the prolonged stay of Rohingyas in Bangladesh during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit scheduled for July 1-5.

“If the problem [Rohingya crisis] remains unresolved for a long time, there’s a possibility of growing some pockets of radicalism. If terrorist acts grow, there’ll be uncertainty in the entire region,” said Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday.
