Myanmar and neighboring Bangladesh have traded blame over stalled efforts to repatriate about 740,000 Muslim Rohingya refugees, who fled a brutal 2017 Myanmar military campaign that drove them from their villages to camps on the Bangladeshi side of their border.

The latest row flared up after Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told reporters in Dhaka that Myanmar was reluctant to take back the Rohingya Muslims despite a signed agreement to repatriate them.

Ethnic Nagas in remote northern Myanmar have long provided sanctuary to insurgents who launch armed raids into northeastern India and then retreat back across the border beyond the reach of Indian security forces.

Myanmar’s inability or unwillingness to uproot those rebel sanctuaries have been a persistent thorn in the side of the two neighbors’ bilateral relations, contributing to mutual mistrust and suspicion over the years.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has slammed Myanmar for delays in the repatriation of Rohingya refugees who fled violence in the neighboring country.

Some 740,000 Rohingya took shelter in fetid, overcrowded camps in Bangladesh after Myanmar’s military drove them over the border in a brutal 2017 crackdown.

Many still fear for their safety if they return to Myanmar, where the Muslim minority has faced decades of repression and erosion of rights.

But the Bangladeshi prime minister’s comments late Sunday are a sign that the country’s patience is wearing thin.

When Asean's leaders meet in Bangkok for their summit on June 22-23, they will discuss a preliminary report about Myanmar by the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre).

According to news reports and press releases, this report -- which remains confidential -- makes an initial assessment of the preparations for the voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

The emphasis of Asean's efforts to support Myanmar with the Rohingya repatriation will be on "low-hanging fruit", the assumption being that practical measures will contribute to creating a conducive environment for the safe, dignified return of Rohingya refugees.

A fishing boat carrying 64 Rohingya Muslim refugees has been found beached on an island in southern Thailand, officials have said.

The chief of Tarutao National Marine Park, Kanjanapan Kamhaeng, said a boat carrying the Rohingya - 28 men, 31, women and five children - was discovered on Tuesday morning.

Myanmar military officials have been spotted at an arms expo in Israel despite a ban on arms sales to the country over the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims.

Photos published in Israeli media last week showed Myanmar military officials in uniform touring the weapons and security conference in Israel last week.

Representatives from foreign militaries, including from countries with no official diplomatic relations with Israel, also attended the arms expo.

More than 160 people on the list of refugees whom Bangladesh wants Myanmar to repatriate have been involved in violence in Rakhine State, said U Soe Aung, deputy minister of Social Welfare, Relief & Resettlement.

“We have evidence that 16,898 people had lived in Myanmar, we found no evidence for 8,340 people, and 168 people were on the terrorist list,” he told the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) session on Thursday.

Buthidaung, the town in the westernmost part of the country, has been provided electricity through national power grid for twenty-four hours starting on 30 October, according to the inhabitants. The 24-hour electric power-supplies start delivering to wards in the Buthidaung township since in the evening of 30 October, as said by U Moe Thyra who is the township electrical engineer.
