More than 160 people on the list of refugees whom Bangladesh wants Myanmar to repatriate have been involved in violence in Rakhine State, said U Soe Aung, deputy minister of Social Welfare, Relief & Resettlement.
“We have evidence that 16,898 people had lived in Myanmar, we found no evidence for 8,340 people, and 168 people were on the terrorist list,” he told the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) session on Thursday.
To repatriate the 700,000 Rakhine Muslims who fled to Bangladesh to escape a brutal military crackdown in the wake of deadly attacks on security outposts by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) in August 2017, a list of 6886 refugee households submitted by Bangladesh had been analysed through May 30.
Although an agreement was signed between the two countries on the repatriation, implementation has been delayed because Bangladesh is not cooperating, said U Thein Swe, minister of Labour, Immigration and Population.
He said Myanmar is ready to begin the repatriation.
ARSA terrorists are charged with 254 counts under the Anti-Terrorist and Weaponry Law, said U Soe Aung. “That there are 21,811 culprits, according to investigators,” he said.
In repatriating the refugees, he added, care is being taken to exclude those who took part in terrorism.
To prevent illegal migration to Rakhine, an Immigration Department office has been opened in Maungdaw. According to a 1980 agreement, there are four border crossings with Bangladesh, and the Maungdaw-Teknaf crossing permits traders with a border pass.
In addition, a border relations office has been opened and information is exchanged at least twice a month to keep out terrorists. – Translated
