BGB returns trespassing Myanmar soldier

The Border Guards Bangladesh has sent back a Myanmar soldier who was arrested over trespassing on the border with Lemuchhari in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari.

The army soldier was returned to the BGP, the border security force in Myanmar, following a flag meeting at Ghundhum border at around 11:00 am on Sunday, said Lt Col Asaduzzaman, chief of BGB-11 battalion.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) handed over a member of Myanmar Army to Myanmar today, 39 days after he was “detained” along the border in Bandarban on January 24, an official of the Bangladeshi paramilitary force has said.

Aung Bo Thin was handed over to the Myanmar Army on Bangladesh-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at Ghumdum point along the border in Naikhangchhari upazila at 12:05pm, BGB battalion- 34 Commander Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed told a press briefing.

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirty-four Rohingya refugees were found on a beach in Malaysia on Friday, police said, the first of the Muslim minority group thought to have arrived in the country by sea for almost a year.

The discovery came just a day after Bangladesh told the UN Security Council that it could no longer accept any more Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations on Friday (Mar 1) stressed that refugees fleeing conflict should be granted safe haven after Bangladesh declared that it would no longer take in Myanmar's Rohingya.

Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told the Security Council on Thursday that the refugee crisis had gone from "bad to worse" and deplored the fact that none of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya sheltering in his country had returned home.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — Thirty-four Rohingya were found on a beach in Malaysia today, police said, the first of the Muslim minority group thought to have arrived in the country by sea for almost a year.

About 740,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar for Bangladesh after a military clampdown in August 2017, joining huge numbers already confined to camps.

A group of village administrators in western Myanmar’s violence-ridden Rakhine state said Friday that they have resigned from their posts, fearing arrest after four other village chiefs were detained by police for allegedly having ties to the rebel Arakan Army (AA) which is fighting the national military in several areas of the region.
