As compared with Cox’s Bazar, the Bhashan Char island is way better for the Rohingyas to live, but since the shelter is temporary the main focus must be given on the repatriation of the displaced people from Myanmar’s Rakhine, speakers told a seminar on Saturday.

Urging the international community not to oppose the government’s relocation plan, they requested them to put pressure on Myanmar to take its own people back with safety and dignity.

He knew his voice was quavering. But U Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s top envoy at the United Nations, kept going. The military rulers who had overthrown Myanmar’s elected government and gunned down peaceful protesters were illegitimate, he said. 

The words stumbled out, both a bit too high and a bit too low. “We will continue to fight,” he said, “for a government which is of the people, by the people, for the people.” 

Mr. Kyaw Moe Tun, a 51-year-old diplomat in a somber suit and tie, raised his hand in the three-finger salute of defiance from the “Hunger Games” films, which has come to symbolize Myanmar’s millions-strong protest movement against the coup-makers. The United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York resounded with applause.

Seeing the violence against civilians in Myanmar in the wake of that country’s coup, Rohingya refugees sheltering in southeastern Bangladesh say their own experience has been validated now that the general Burmese population is experiencing the brutality of its military.

Refugee leaders who spoke to BenarNews expressed solidarity with Myanmar protesters, as well as bitterness that they did not receive the same in 2017, when a brutal military crackdown on their community caused 740,000 of the stateless Muslim minority to flee to Bangladesh.

“At that time, if everyone had joined the movement to stop the atrocities against the Rohingya, then they would not have had to join this protest movement,” Muhib Ullah, chairman of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, told BenarNews, an RFA-affiliated online news service, from the Kutupalong refugee camp this week.

This article is written to mark the 2nd March 1962, the day the Myanmar Armed Forces seized power and enslaved the peoples under the military colonialism. On that very night, a meeting of the Rangoon University Students Union was held. About 300 students attended the meeting. Some 50 of them pledged to oppose and fight the junta. I was one of them. Now, after 59 years, I am the only one surviving and talking. With this humble article, I honor my comrades who sacrificed their lives in our fight for freedom from the military colonialism. South Korean ambassador in Dhaka Lee Jang-keun visited the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar. He met representatives of the UN agencies, international donor organisations and the local administration in Cox’s Bazar and discussed how to step up collaboration to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

Lee Jang-keun told Prothom Alo on Thursday, “This is the first time I visited Cox’s Bazar to see the Rohingya crisis since I came to Dhaka in July last year. I got an overall idea on the crisis through this visit.”

DHAKA: A group of Rohingya refugees is adrift in a boat in the Andaman Sea without food or water, the United Nations said Wednesday, as their families worried that many may have already died.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, or UNHCR, said it understands that some of the refugees died after the boat left southern Bangladesh about two weeks ago. It said it does not know the boat’s exact current location.

India today said it continued talks with Bangladesh to take back the 81 Rohingyas rescued by its coast guard after finding them adrift in the high seas with no fuel and food.

"We have been in touch with Bangladesh to repatriate them [Rohingyas] back to Bangladesh. The issue figured at the recent home secretary-level talks [between the two countries]," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said at the weekly virtual media briefing.

Tens of thousands protest in Myanmar against military takeover

At least 38 people were killed during anti-coup protests in Myanmar on Wednesday - more than a month after the military seized power from the nation's elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy Party (NLD).

The United Nations (UN) described the bloodshed as the "darkest day" since Ms Suu Kyi and members of her party were rounded up and detained under the orders of military commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing, who is now in control of Myanmar's levers of power.
