n a significant ruling, the International Court of Justice orders Myanmar to protect the minority Rohingya population from human rights atrocities, particularly genocide.

IN the absence of any meaningful global effort to hold Myanmar accountable for the continued military campaign against the Rohingya community in Rakhine State, the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that Myanmar should protect the Rohingyas against genocide comes as a relief to the beleaguered minority population. In November 2019, The Gambia, the West African country, filed a suit against Myanmar accusing it of systematic ethnic cleansing from October 2016 in violation of the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention. It alleged that the country was committing “an ongoing genocide against its minority Muslim Rohingya population”.

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar’s army said in a statement on Friday it would hold more court-martials over alleged abuses against Rohingya Muslims, after a government-appointed commission said soldiers committed war crimes against the minority.

The panel concluded, in a report published in January, that members of the security forces, among “multiple actors”, were responsible for war crimes and serious human rights violations during a military-led crackdown against the group in 2017.

The army said in a post on its website on Friday it had studied the panel’s report in great detail and was reviewing allegations.

ROME, Feb 19 2020 (IPS) - In a groundbreaking ruling in January 2020, the International Court of Justice demanded that Myanmar halt all measures that contribute to the genocide of the Rohingya community.

The order was lauded by international bodies and organisations who have been involved with and/or closely following the case since the Gambia filed a lawsuit against Myanmar for human rights violations against the Rohingya community.

The United Nations Secretary General has said he “welcomes” the order and “will promptly transmit the notice of the provisional measures ordered by the Court to the Security Council,”

The Rohingya refugees continue to remain in camps in Bangladesh, where they are vulnerable to human trafficking and other forms of violence.

The commander-in-chief of Myanmar’s defence forces – recommended by the UN for investigation and prosecution for war crimes and genocide – has met with Australia’s ambassador and says he wants to train more of his officers in Australia.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is the supreme commander of Myanmar’s military, known as the Tatmadaw, which has been accused of genocide in its systematic persecution of the ethnic and religious minority Rohingya.
