Army Officer, 2 Navy Personnel Killed in AA Rocket Attack in Rakhine

YANGON—An army captain and two naval personnel based in southern Rakhine State’s Kyaukphyu Township were killed when the Arakan Army (AA) launched rocket attacks on two naval vessels on a river in Myebon Township last Friday.

A staff member from Kyaukphyu General Hospital confirmed to The Irrawaddy on Monday that three bodies arrived for postmortems on Saturday. According to the staff member, the bodies were identified as those of an army captain from Kyaukphyu-based Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 543 and two personnel from Danyawaddy Naval Base, situated 4 kilometers east of downtown Kyaukphyu. Some Kyaukphyu locals said that the army officer was identified as Captain Soe Htet Aung.

‘Gangsters’ squeezed RM80,000 from Rohingya in Malaysia to fund arms for insurgent group, says report

PETALING JAYA: A Myanmar-based insurgent group has sourced some RM80,000 in funds from Rohingya refugees in Malaysia to buy firearms and ammunition, Bukit Aman told the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The paper quoted Bukit Aman Special Branch Anti-Terrorist Division principal assistant director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay as saying that the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) has raised funds through a “gangster-like” extortion racket in seven states in the peninsular.

After fighters attacked security targets in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state on August 25, 2017, the Myanmar military responded by killing and maiming thousands of Rohingya civilians, raping hundreds of women and girls, and burning entire villages to the ground. Almost two years after the military-led "clearance operation" that forced more than 745,000 Rohingya men, women and children to flee and seek refuge in Bangladesh, this humanitarian crisis seems more intractable than ever.

While referring to the oppression against the Palestinian people and violations of international law and international human rights law in the occupied Palestinian territory, he cautioned that mere expression of concerns for the misdeeds in Palestine and other places in the world did not stop these from recurring again.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador credits Malaysia’s counter terrorism success to the sharing of information with international counterparts who have more experience in fighting extremist ideologies.

The Counter Terrorism (E8) Division of the Bukit Aman Special Branch department has racked up an impressive number of arrests and stopped planned attacks from happening here.

“We have been watching closely the developments taking place in the Middle East as there had been earlier concerns that the defeat of the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria and Iraq could lead to frustrated fighters who have yet to fulfill their mission to become martyrs,” Abdul Hamid told the Malay Mail.

Fifty Six suspects’ detainees from six townships of Rakhine State were on Thursday arraigned in Sittwe Township court over an alleged engaging with Arakan Army (AA) that is fighting central Burmese government for more autonomy.

Among those suspects, (41) villagers are from different regions of Mrauk U, five villagers are from Kyauk Taw, three villagers are from Minbra and each villagers from Pauk Taw, Rathidaung and Ponna Gyunt townships respectively along with two monks.

In a meeting with victims of religious persecution on Wednesday, President Donald Trump repeatedly appeared to be unaware of many of the world’s most pressing humanitarian crises.

Trump met with more than two dozen survivors of religious conflict, a few of whom told their stories — and made impassioned entreaties for aid — directly to the president. As he asked questions of his guests, the president seemed to reveal a stark lack of familiarity with the fundamental details of problems faced by Rohingya in Myanmar, Uighurs in China, and Yazidis in Iraq — groups in crisis that his own administration has established positions and policies on.

DHAKA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Bangladesh has arrested 12 men suspected of targeting Rohingya refugees for trafficking, police said on Friday, amid concerns over the growing desperation of the refugees.

Two Rohingya women and a Bangladeshi child were also held in the operation by the Rapid Action Battalion, an elite force of the Bangladesh police, in the capital Dhaka late on Thursday. Police said they were being questioned.
