Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women examines the situation of Rohingya women and girls in northern Rakhine state

GENEVA (22 February 2019) - The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women this afternoon reviewed the situation of Rohingya women and girls in northern Rakhine state, based on a report submitted by Myanmar under the exceptional reporting procedure.

The world now has 22.5 million refugees along with 65.6 million forcibly and internally displaced people and 10 million stateless people. Being stateless is the biggest violation of human rights itself, as Article 15 of the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948” as well as Article 8(1) and 9 of the “Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness 1961” have ensured the “right to nationality.”

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen yesterday said Rohingyas are violent as they do not have citizenship anywhere.

Attacking German journalists at Ukhia Rohingya Camp in Cox's Bazaar was an unfortunate act by the Rohingyas, he said.

The incident took place at the Shalbagan Rohingya camp in Nayapara 

A Rohingya youth was shot dead by miscreants at the Shalbagan Rohingya camp of Nayapara in Teknaf on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Hamid, 36, son of Md Hossain.

Inspector of Nayapara police outpost Abdus Salam said a gang of miscreants took Hamid to a nearby hill at gunpoint and killed him.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

ASEAN ‘invited’ to help repatriate Rohingyas

Dhaka, Feb 23 (UNB) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been invited to extend help in the process of repatriation for “verified Rohingyas” from Bangladesh, according to a message received from Geneva.

A total of 2,260 Rohingyas of 485 families were supposed to be repatriated in the first phase as Bangladesh and Myanmar had agreed to begin their repatriation in mid-November last year which was halted due to lack of conducive environment in Rakhine State.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today said as over 1.2 million Rohingyas are living in Cox's Bazar district of the country, much of Bangladesh's forest is getting destroyed creating environmental disasters.
