H.E. Mr Chen Hai, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar, gave an interview to the Myanmar correspondent and expounded China's stance on the Rakhine issue. The interview was broadcast on MRTV and MITV. Below is the transcript of his response.

Ambassador Chen said that the Rakhine issue is a complicated issue with specific historical background and realistic roots. China is a friendly neighbour to both Myanmar and Bangladesh. China hopes that Myanmar and Bangladesh can properly resolve the issue through bilateral friendly consultations, striving to improve the livelihood of the people from Myanmar and Bangladesh who live and work in the neighbouring areas of Rakhine State and make this area a bond of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. I hope that the international society can also play a positive role in this regard.

Aung San Suu Kyi is among several top Myanmar officials named in a case filed in Argentina for crimes against Rohingya Muslims, the first time the Nobel Laureate has been legally targeted over the crisis.

Rohingya and Latin American human rights groups submitted the lawsuit in Argentina on Wednesday under the principle of “universal jurisdiction,” a legal concept enshrined in many countries’ laws.

The Gambia is exploiting a little-known and rarely-invoked provision of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to go after the government of Myanmar.

DAKAR, Senegal — Gambia, the smallest country in continental Africa, took an unprecedented step this week in the realm of international justice: It filed a lawsuit at the United Nations’ top court accusing Myanmar of genocide against Rohingya Muslims.

The case at the International Court of Justice, which typically addresses disputes between states, raised eyebrows because Myanmar sits roughly 7,000 miles from Gambia, which lacks any tangible connection to the protracted crisis in Southeast Asia.
