Don't ignore the Rohingya

Even though the joint communique released after their previous meeting in June said they are committed to assisting Myanmar ensure safety in Rakhine state for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, Asean's leaders' "commitment" has had little effect on the ground.

As leaders gather this weekend in Bangkok for the Asean Summit and on Monday for the East Asia Summit, a draft of the East Asia Summit statement leaked to Kyodo News agency indicates that the Rohingya issue will not be on the agenda, largely due to pressure exerted by Myanmar.

MRAUK U, Myanmar—Here in the town of Mrauk U, in Myanmar’s troubled Rakhine state, there has been little to celebrate during this October’s Thadingyut, the second-most important annual festival of the Buddhist calendar. Normally, the auspicious full moon would be hailed with a floating armada of delicate candlelit paper lanterns and song, theater, and dance.

Yet this year, there are no celebrations.

Court hikes jail terms in infamous Rohingya graveyard case

The Appeal Court has significantly increased the prison terms for many defendants in the huge Rohingya trafficking case that followed the discovery of the graves of many illegal migrants in the far South four years ago.

Sentences were increased to around 80 years for defendants including an army lieutenant general and several local southern politicians.

Bangladesh will verify Myanmar's claim over voluntary return of some Rohingyas to Myanmar as the country keeps spreading misleading information to the international community to avoid repatriation.
"We'll issue a press statement after verifying the claim," Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told reporters on Thursday.

Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka in a Facebook post claimed 46 displaced persons returned to Myanmar from Bangladesh on their own volition through Taung Pyo Letwe and Nga Khu Ya Reception Centers on Thursday.

In our estimate, not a single Rohingya has returned to Myanmar, says foreign minister AK Abdul Momen 

Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen yesterday said Bangladesh will verify Myanmar’s claim that several hundred Rohingyas have voluntarily returned to Myanmar as that country has repeatedly been spreading misinformation. “In our estimate, not a single Rohingya has returned to Myanmar. But Myanmar claimed that several hundred Rohingyas had returned to their homeland. It is their account—we don’t know anything about it. They have not taken back the Rohingyas who are at their border,” he added. The minister said this in reply to a query by journalists in the capital.

Myanmar should concentrate on fulfilling its obligations to take back its forcibly displaced people, says a Foreign Ministry statement

Bangladesh has accused Myanmar of misleading the international community with made-up information regarding Rohingya repatriation, asking the latter to stop making false accusations against its neighbour.

In a strongly-worded press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, Dhaka has said Naypyidaw should, instead, be fulfilling its obligations by taking back its own people.
