Speakers at a discussion yesterday called upon the international community to take immediate steps towards repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

They acknowledged plight of the refugees and highlighted the importance of ensuring their return to Myanmar with dignity and safety.

The discussion -- “Fostering Peaceful and Inclusive Society and the Role of Religious Leaders and Actors” -- was held at a hotel in Chattogram.

United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organised the event in partnership with Save and Serve Foundation.

Speakers urged national and international organisations to help host communities in Bangladesh to overcome the challenges caused by the influx, and contribute to the peaceful coexistence of all religious groups in Chattogram, said a UNDP press release.

Addressing as chief guest, State Minister for Religious Affairs Advocate Sheikh Md Abdullah reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to promote secularism and inclusive development. He urged international community to take immediate steps towards the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

Adama Dieng, under secretary-general and UN special adviser on Prevention of Genocide, said Bangladesh demonstrated generosity towards Rohingyas by providing them with support.

Local lawmaker and government, UN and NGO officials also spoke in the meeting.
