Japan will consider increasing its humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh, a prominent Japanese lawmaker said yesterday.

"We are planning to visit Cox's Bazar tomorrow. We would like to see the situation and provide some humanitarian assistance based on the actual needs there," said Nakanishi Yusuke, director of the committee on general affairs, House of Councillors at the National Diet.

Myanmar will allow international volunteers, including those from the UN, China and ASEAN countries, to take part in the humanitarian assistance programmes for Rohingyas during their repatriation to Rakhine.

The country agreed to this during a director meeting between Bangladesh and Myanmar in Naypiydaw yesterday, a member of the Bangladesh delegation to the meeting told The Daily Star.

The issue of starting repatriation in smaller scale by December under a trilateral initiative mediated by China will be discussed in the meeting.

Bangladesh wants to start repatriation by December, Rohingya worry for their safety in Myanmar

A high-level delegation from Bangladesh reached Myanmar on Monday to lead a Chinese-mediated meeting on Rohingya repatriation.

A list of over 3,000 Rohingya under a pilot program has been sent to Myanmar to verify and a possible repatriation could begin under the mediation of China, according to Bangladeshi officials.

Alicia Kearns, the first woman chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the UK Parliament, praised Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to millions of Rohingya refugees who were persecuted in Myanmar.

She also emphasised on increasing international pressure to repatriate Rohingyas to Myanmar.

SINCE August 25, 2017, the Myanmar army began a large-scale violence against the Rohingyas in Rakhine State. Rohingya victims said that mobs joined the crackdown of the military junta, forcing more than 700,000 Rohingyas to take refuge in Bangladesh. More than 1.1 million Rohingyas now stay in 34 refugee camps at Teknaf and Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar. The Rohingyas say that the Myanmar army forced them to come to Bangladesh with indiscriminate killing, rape and arson.

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr. A K Abdul Momen said that Rohingya crisis has the potential to destabilize the whole region unless the international community intensifies their efforts to eventuate the sustainable repatriation of the 1.2 million forcibly displaced Rohingyas, temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh, to their homeland Myanmar.

That the UK Parliament's Foreign Affairs Select Committee Chair has lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for giving shelter to forcibly displaced Rohingya population of Myanmar is an appreciable enough gesture, but the fact that she stressed on the importance of international pressure on Myanmar to commence repatriation efforts is what the world needs to take away from this.

This week marks the sixth anniversary of the onslaught of ruthless violence, rape and genocide by the military in Myanmar against the Rohingya of all ages. The genocidal conduct of the regime forces compelled a staggering three-quarters of a million Rohingya, men, women and children, to flee to Bangladesh, clutching their meager possessions.
