Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen has said that Myanmar military authorities informed Beijing that they are willing to take back the displaced Rohingyas after verification, reports the official news agency BSS. Briefing the media about the outcome of the meeting with the Chinese Ambassador Li Jiming in Dhaka on Thursday, Dr. Momen said that Myanmar’s military government has conveyed that they would honour all the previous deals signed between Dhaka and Naypyidaw to commence Rohingya repatriation. However, Myanmar did not mention any specific date for the process to start. He said that China has assured Bangladesh that it will continue its efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

Foreign Minister Dr. Momen also requested the Chinese Ambassador to convey to Beijing to play a role so that Rohingyas living on the zero point between Bangladesh and Myanmar can be taken back to the Myanmar side.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh (MoFA) in its statement after the meeting between Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen and Chinese Ambassador Li Jimin said that both sides discussed issues of mutual interests as well as the issue of the repatriation of Rohingyas at an early date. The Chinese Embassy in its press release said that the two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations, regional and international situations as well as repatriation of displaced people from Myanmar.

Bangladesh and Myanmar had signed an agreement for the repatriation of Rohingyas in November 2017. China has been playing the role of a mediator since 2017 but not a single Rohingya refugee settled in Bangladesh has gone back to Myanmar till date. China had also convened a tripartite meeting at the Secretary level on January 19 last year on the Rohingya repatriation issue but no further progress was achieved. Currently Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar after the military crackdown in 2017.
