KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 (Bernama) -- The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), through its embassy here, continues to provide educational assistance and aid for Rohingya students by donating RM300,000 today.

UAE Ambassador to Malaysia Khalid Ghanim Alghaith said UAE is targeting the education sector as a key area to help the Rohingya community's younger generation to equip themselves for a better future.

The aid is part of the foundation's Humanitarian Assistance programme for Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia, where US$1 million have been allocated since 2015.

"The aid has been previously distributed in four phases and this time, the amount of donation (RM300,000) will be given to 708 students from five schools (Rohingya-community schools).

"With the help of UNHCR Education Department, we have listed a total of 19 schools and community learning centres in the Klang Valley. We have previously given assistance to four schools and we will target the remaining schools in the coming months."

Khalid Alghaith told this to reporters after the "Humanitarian and Development for Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia” aid distribution ceremony at University of Malaya's Academy of Islamic Studies, here, today.

Also present at the event were Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation's representative Sahar Ali Alzaabi and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Malaysia representative Thomas Albrecht.

At the event, around 708 pupils from five schools in Klang Valley -- Tzu-Chi Foundation (Selayang) - Harmony School, Tzu-Chi Foundation (Ampang) Unity School, Rohingya Education Centre Klang, Rohingya Education Centre Gombak, and Madrasah Anak Yatim dan Tahfiz Quran Hashimiyah -- received the assistance package comprising a school bag, school uniforms, shoes, sports sets, stationeries and other items.

On the same note, Khalid Alghaith pointed out that the joint humanitarian collaboration between the UAE and Malaysia to help the Rohingya community at the Cox's Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh would also be continued.

He said the UAE's assistance given is in the form of medical equipment, medicines and vehicles, while Malaysia provides medical expertise and staff.

The Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation was established by UAE President, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in July 2007.

To date, the foundation's assistance around the world has reached more than 87 countries since its inception.
