Clashes have broken out between the Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar’s junta in Rathedaung, Kyauktaw, Minbya and Mrauk U townships on Monday, with at least three junta positions falling across Rakhine State, according to the armed group.

The AA attacked junta Border Guard Police outposts in Done Pike and Chein Khar Li villages, Rathedaung Township, in northern Rakhine State, before dawn.
“We have seized them. We also seized outposts in Rathedaung Township and clashes are still breaking out. We have detainedsome police officers in these clashes,” said Khaing Thukha, the AA’s spokesman.

He did not confirm how many junta positions had been seized.

Fighting in northern Rakhine State reported on Monday. The AA occupied A Pauk Wa village police station in Kyauktaw Township on Monday afternoon without firing a shot, according to residents.

“The police were told by the AA to close the village policestation a few days ago. But they didn’t. However, when the AA arrived, over 20 military and police personnel surrendered to the AA and were peacefully detained,” said a Kyauktaw resident.

The AA on Monday morning ambushed two junta trucks in Minbya Township, burning one, killing some troops and abducting a colonel and captain and other soldiers.

Mrauk U residents said troops in the historic city are shelling indiscriminately with fighting reported on Monday morning.

“A junta convoy was attacked by the AA and the troops ran away. Troops at the entrance of Mrauk U opened fire on a civilian car,” said a Mrauk U resident.

The military authorities in the state’s capital, Sittwe, ordered an immediate curfew after 9pm, according to residents.

The junta has blocked all major Rakhine roads and banned all regular passenger boats from operating. Panic buying was reported in Mrauk U and Sittwe.
