A high-level event on the Rohingya crisis titled ‘Have they forgotten us?’ held at the UN Headquarters in New York again reminds the world community that they must gear up their collective efforts in order to repatriate Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar from Bangladesh smoothly and safely.
In the event Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed four proposals, urging the global community to give a solution to the Rohingya crisis. In her statement Sheikh Hasina urged the world community to remain seized of the matter and continue to keep this issue at the top of our agenda alongside continuing our humanitarian efforts to ensure the sustenance of these ill-fated and hapless human beings.
We think the message from Bangladesh, Canada, Gambia, Malaysia, Turkey, the UK and the USA, who hosted the event, will once again remind all the enduring suffering of Rohingya minorities since the world witnessed the tragic exodus of the Rohingyas from Myanmar for the last six years. It is the responsibility of global community to ensure that the Rohingyas are able to return to their homes in Myanmar and pursue a life of dignity and certainty.
We think the message from Bangladesh, Canada, Gambia, Malaysia, Turkey, the UK and the USA, who hosted the event, will once again remind all the enduring suffering of Rohingya minorities since the world witnessed the tragic exodus of the Rohingyas from Myanmar for the last six years. Since August 25 in 2017, Bangladesh has been hosting over 1.2 million forcefully displaced Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district and most of them arrived there after a military crackdown by Myanmar, which the UN called a ‘textbook example of ethnic cleansing’ and other rights groups dubbed as ‘genocide’. Myanmar, however, has not taken back a single Rohingya in the last nearly six years while repatriation attempts failed twice due to trust deficit among the forcibly displaced people about their safety and security in Rakhine state.
Rohingyas are becoming frustrated due to protracted uncertainty over their repatriation which has a potential risk as it entices many of them to get involved in criminal activities. World community, UN, right bodies must come forward and extend all out cooperation to Bangladesh in order to ensure smooth repatriation of Rohingyas. They will also have to continue to put pressure on Myanmar military government to bring back its national from here in this regard.
The world community should learn from Bangladesh how to stand beside the distressed humanity. Bangladesh provided shelter to the Rohingyas on humanitarian ground. But now they are a big burden for Bangladesh.
Local people of Cox's Bazar are facing serious difficulties and sufferings because of them (Rohingyas). We think the relocation arrangements can not be a permanent solution. The world must take all measures to compel Myanmar to create conditions enabling the Rohingyas’ safe, dignified and voluntary repatriation to their homeland.
