Indonesian Foreign Minister: The Rohingya Cry in Silence, We Must Not Remain Silent

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
Friday, 22/September/2023

New York, USA - "The fate of the Rohingya community remains unclear. The global situation and domestic conditions in Myanmar make this issue more complex and difficult. Strong political commitment to resolve this issue is inevitable," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at a Side Event meeting on Rohingya entitled "Have they Forgotten Us? Ensuring Continued Global Solidarity with the Rohingya of Myanmar" on the sidelines of the High Level Week of the 78th UN General Assembly Session (21/9).

At the meeting, the Indonesian Foreign Minister conveyed two things that need to be done to help Rohingya refugees, namely:

First, encourage a political solution.

"The Rohingya issue is a humanitarian one, but it is very political. Therefore, the only way out for these Rohingya is through a political solution," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.

Resolving the Rohingya issue should be an integral part and parcel of the solution to the political crisis in Myanmar. The Foreign Minister said that inclusive national dialogue efforts encouraged by ASEAN through the 5 Point Consensus must also include solutions for the Rohingya community.

Regarding the issue of repatriation of Rohingya refugees, the Foreign Minister said that it must be facilitated voluntarily, safely and with dignity.

Furthermore, Foreign Minister Retno said that ASEAN would continue to help the Rohingya and ASEAN would never forget the Rohingya.

Second, ensure the availability of humanitarian assistance.

In general, the people of Myanmar need humanitarian assistance, but aid for the Rohingya is most needed.

"Currently more than 1 million Rohingya people are displaced as refugees, while those living in Rakhine region are also facing a very difficult situation. They are vulnerable to becoming victims of organized crime," said the Indonesian Foreign Minister.

Therefore, support from the international community needs to be strengthened.

"Right now, the Rohingya community is crying in silence. Just because we cannot hear their cries, we must not remain silent," said Foreign Minister Retno closing her statement.

The event was co-sponsored by Bangladesh, Indonesia, Canada, Gambia, Malaysia, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States.
