The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), a terrorist armed group, recently abducted a Muslim man with his son and later burned down their car in northern Maungdaw township of Rakhine State.

The abducted father and son are identified as U Saw Lean Mula and U Hla Win, who hail from Sapae Gone Muslim village in western Myanmar border areas.

The father-son duo were travelling to Kyein Chaung village at around 6 pm on 12 August. Around 20 ARSA members were waiting for them with weapons in between Long Dong and Kyin Chaung village. Later they took away the father-son duo and set their car on fire.

A resident informed that a few hours before the incident, they saw some ARSA members on the spot as he brought his school children by the road.

"Around five ARSA members stopped all the cars and motorbikes moving on the road. They also took away the vehicle keys. One of them spoke in Burmese language. But they did not do any harm to the passengers,” he added.

By then the father-son duo's car arrived and ARSA members allowed them to leave the place. Soon more armed members joined them and they took away the father-son due towards Myo Thit village near the border fence with Bangladesh.

"The father-son duo went to Kyin Cheung village every night. ARSA members knew about it and waited for them on the road,” he stated, adding that after crossing Myo Thit village, the group had entered into Bangladesh via Yedwin Byi Muslim village.

A former member of Parliament from Maungdaw township opined that arrest of the father-son duo was related to some business deals with the ARSA.

"I know it's related to the business. The father-son duo had business disputes with the ARSA,” he added.

Local residents said that the incident took place about one mile away from the repatriation camps, built by the Indian government to deal with Muslim refugees, who fled to Bangladesh.
