Bangkok, Apr 9 (EFE).- Myanmar’s security forces on Friday launched explosive devices against anti-coup protesters in the city of Bago, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Yangon, amid continued condemnation by the international community against the repression.
A resident told online news portal Myanmar Now that, since early morning, the security forces have been firing with heavy weapons at a group of protesters after at least two people died in the city the previous day as a result of repression by the authorities.
The news website also published a series of photographs showing a projectile, which could be a piece of mortar.
Meanwhile, local newspaper Irrawaddy reported that the security forces used artillery to attack the line of barrels installed by protesters in Bago, without confirming the number of victims.
In a video posted on social media, a series of explosions, accompanied by shots, can be heard before dawn, while Myanmar activist Ro Nay San Lwin has said that the actions of the military have caused more deaths and injuries.
At least 614 people have lost their lives since the military coup on Feb. 1 due to brutal repression by the security forces, according to data verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
“Two months ago, on February 9, Mya Thwe Thwe Khine was shot while taking cover under a bus shelter during a protest in Naypyidaw. She was 19. Since then, over 600 civilians have been killed in Myanmar, many of them while protesting for hard-won democratic rights and freedoms,” a dozen ambassadors to Myanmar, including from Spain and other countries of the European Union, said in a joint statement on Friday.
Despite violence and intimidation by the authorities, the civil dissidence movement continues in the country.
On Friday, hundreds of people on motorcycles rode through the streets of Mandalay, the country’s second most populated city, shouting slogans against the military.
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an informal meeting on Friday to analyze the crisis in Myanmar.
The meeting, chaired by the United Kingdom, will be held under the Arria Formula which allows members of the Security Council and guests who are affected by the issue being addressed to hold informal discussions.
The UN also reported that UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, will travel to the region this week, with visits to Bangkok and possibly other capitals, while she continues to seek clearance to enter Myanmar.
The military justifies its coup alleging fraud in the November elections, in which Suu Kyi’s party won by a landslide, and which were described as legitimate by international observers. EFE
