Turkey to raise Rohingya issue at next UNSC meet

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has promised to raise the Rohingya issue at the next UN Security Council meeting.
He made the promise while talking to Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on phone on Saturday.

The Turkish foreign minister said his country would continue all kinds of cooperation for the safe return of the Rohingya refugees residing in Bangladesh to Myanmar.

Dr Momen said a virtual session needs to be held at the Director General-level considering the current situation to prepare for the D-8 conference next year.

He requested the Turkish foreign minister to set up a D-8 working group to strengthen economic cooperation in the aftermath of coronavirus. MevlütÇavuşoğlu agreed with Bangladesh's proposal on all the issues.

Turkey is currently serving as the president of D-8.

Dr Momen hopes that Turkey, as a member of the G20, would help ensure that Bangladesh gets assistance from the 7 trillion funds allocated by the G20 for the least developed countries.

The Bangladesh foreign minister requested taking effective steps on the proposal given to form a COVID-19 Recovery & Response Fund at a recent meeting with the OIC foreign ministers.

He mentioned that in the current situation, many Bangladeshis working in different countries of the world are in financial crisis.

Dr Momen sought Turkey's cooperation in enabling Bangladeshi expatriates to retain their jobs. He also sought Turkey's help in securing financial assistance equal to at least six months' wages if any worker returns to the country.

Dr Momen sought Turkey's co-operation to ensure that buyers from different countries do not cancel purchases from Bangladeshi garment sector, which is now facing problems due to coronavirus crisis.

The Turkish foreign minister agreed to Dr Momen’s proposal to work together on food security.
The two foreign ministers expressed interest in taking initiatives in the future to increase trade between the two countries.

At the same time, the Turkish foreign minister expressed interest in providing 1 lakh surgical masks, including N-95 masks, to Bangladesh.
