India on Thursday slammed UN human rights experts who "condemned" the Indian government's decision to deport three Rohingya to Myanmar and said that the statements by them are misleading and incorrect. Ministry of external affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, while responding to a query, also claimed that New Delhi's action is in accordance with Indian laws.

Kumar said, "The interpretation made of the facts of the case, as portrayed in the statement, are misleading and incorrect. The repatriation of illegal immigrants to their country of origin is in accordance with Indian laws."

The three Rohingya in question were a father and his two children, who were imprisoned since 2013, and were deported last month after instructions from courts to the government.

Kumar added, "The government will continue to take actions as may be necessary for the implementation of Indian laws, and as directed by our judiciary." Last year, the SC had refused to interfere in the government's decision to deport seven Rohingya men. On January 3, 2019, India then deported five Rohingya back to Myanmar.

In a statement, UN human rights experts said, "We are dismayed by the decision of the Indian Government to continue forced returns of Rohingya to Myanmar, where they face high risk of attacks, reprisals and other forms of persecution," adding, "We urge the authorities to stop such forced deportations which are prohibited under international law". The also expressed concern over the systemic use of indefinite detention of Rohingya."

ONGOING CASES

  • After the SC refused to interfere in the government’s decision, on January 3, 2019, India then deported five Rohingya back to Myanmar
  • Three others — a father and his two sons imprisoned since 2013 — were then deported last month
