India Says UN's Remarks on Rohingya Repatriation 'Misleading'

The ministry of external affairs claimed the deportation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar was as per the Indian law and as directed by the judiciary.

New Delhi: Rejecting criticism by UN human rights experts over the deportation of three Rohingya refugees, India said on Thursday that the repatriation was taken under court instructions and such actions will continue if necessary.

Earlier this week, five UN special rapporteurs had issued a joint statement after three Rohingya refugees were deported on March 28 to Myanmar. They expressed dismay that the Indian government continued with “forced returns of Rohingya to Myanmar, where they face a high risk of attacks, reprisals and other forms of persecution because of their ethnic and religious identity”.

The ministry of external affairs claimed that the repatriation was wrongly presented by UN experts.

“We have seen the statement to which you refer. The interpretation made of the facts of the case, as portrayed in the statement, are misleading and incorrect. The repatriation of illegal immigrants to their country of origin is in accordance with Indian laws,” said MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar at a weekly briefing.

He asserted that those actions were taken on instructions of India’s court, which “required the Government at the State and Union levels to detect, detain and deport illegal immigrants”.

India will continue “to take actions as may be necessary in implementation of Indian laws, and as directed by our Judiciary,” added Kumar.

The first deportations of Rohingya refugees took place last year after the Supreme Court refused to give a stay in October 2018. The second deportation took place in January when five of a family who had been detained since 2014 were sent to Myanmar. Since the identification of two younger members of the family was not confirmed by Myanmar, the two along with the father remained back. They were deported nearly three months later.
