Myanmar and Bangladesh will cooperate to combat narcotics and terrorists along their border, according to a joint statement issued after the sixth Myanmar-Bangladesh border guard forces meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

“Matters of mutual benefit were discussed at the meeting, and both sides agreed to cooperate in those sectors,” said police Brigadier General Myo Than, who led the Myanmar delegation at the meeting a day earlier.

The two countries agreed to immediately report any attack on border guards to the regional commander or battalion commander and to exchange information on cross-border crime and terrorist acts.

In addition to showing zero tolerance for terrorist acts and illegal drugs, both sides vowed to pursue social-economic development in the border areas, to repatriate criminals who have served their sentences, and to continue joint patrols on land and at sea.

The Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) also agreed to assist the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in communicating with forces carrying out border area management in Myanmar, police Brig Gen Myo Than said.

They also agreed to hold monthly battalion commander meetings, twice yearly regional head meetings, and annual senior officer meetings in rotation.

The two sides agreed to organise sports events and cultural exchange programmes between the two forces at a convenient time and place.

Eleven Bangladeshi delegates, led by BGB Director General Major General Shafeenul Islam, and 17 Myanmar delegates, led by police Brig Gen Myo Than, attended the meeting hosted by Myanmar. The next meeting is planned for Bangladesh in October.
