President U Win Myint has established a new committee on Rakhine State to help ensure peace and stability in the region.

Members of the Assistance Committee on Rakhine State Peace and Stability arrived in Rakhine’s capital, Sittwe, on Tuesday to meet officials and local people, according to U San Kyaw Hla, speaker of the Rakhine parliament.

He said the parliament is to meet with the committee members on Wednesday, but no agenda was released for the meeting.

“I think they may explain about their duties and accountability as mentioned in the description of committee,” U San Kyaw Hla said.

According to its schedule, the committee would spend two days in Sittwe, meeting with such organisations as the Arakan National Party (ANP).

U Tun Aung Kyaw, ANP secretary, said the party received an invitation from the committee to meet on Wednesday, but no agenda was provided.

“We have no idea what we are going to talk about at the meeting. We are just going to listen to what they have to say,” he said.

On March 14, President U Win Myint announced the establishment of the 14-member committee, led by Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) Deputy Speaker U Aye Thar Aung. Its members include ministers, senior police officers and MPs.

According to the president’s office, the committee will conduct field visits and meet with local people before submitting suggestions for long- and short-term mechanisms and government policies aimed at ensuring state stability.

U Oo Hla Saw, a member of the committee, said it was formed too late because violence has already escalated.

“We cannot hope for much from the committee, but we have to try to help Rakhine,” he said.

He said he did not officially accept to be a member of the committee as he questioned its mandate and authority.
