Ansar camp looting suspect Rohingya killed in ‘gunfight’

A Rohingya youth accused of robbery at Ansar Battalion camp and murder of its commander was killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ with the Rapid Action Battalion at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar Friday morning.

The deceased, Nurul Alam, 35, was arrested in February 2017 in the case filed for looting arms from the Ansar camp near Nayapara Rohingya camp on May 13, 2016. He was later released on bail in December 2017 while the trial of the case was still pending with the Cox’s Bazar Sessions Judge’s Court.

RAB-7 spokesperson Mimtanur Rahman on Friday said that on information they raided Damdamia of Teknaf at about 5:00am when they came under attack by the, and in retaliation, they opened fire, resulting in the death of the man.

‘They were preparing for committing a robbery,’ he added.

In a text, the battalion stated that their operational team exchanged fire with ‘a group of robbers’ in which ‘top robber’ Nurul Alam, also ‘killer of Ansar camp commander, was killed’.
It also read the battalion seized two pistols, two magazines and 13 bullets from the scene.

Nurul Alam was seen holding a machine gun and standing beside Al Yaqeen leader Ataullah abu Ammar Jununi various videos released on social media in 2016. 

On March 1, 2017, the battalion claimed that it recovered looted firearms in Naikhyanchari upazila of Bandarban and they completed the recovery of all the 11 looted rifles and 220 of the 670 bullets robbed from an Ansar camp

Battalion commander in Teknaf Lieutenant Mirza Shahed Mahtad said Nurul Alam went into hiding after his release on bail. ‘Four-five people, especially volunteers who had helped law enforcers to catch him, were killed inside Rohingya camps recently,’ he said.

Cox’s Bazar additional police superintendent Nihad Adnan Taian said that they were examining the past records of Nurul Alam.

On August 31, 2018, criminals shot Rohingya volunteer Md Yeaser, 25, inside a camp at Leda of Teknaf. 

On March 8, 2018, 32-year-old Rohingya Hossain Ali was shot dead at Nayapara camp. Nurul Alam was blamed for the killings, police officials said.
