The government is implementing step by step the pledges that the National League for Democracy made in the 2015 general election, said State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Speaking at the 72nd Shan State Day ceremony at the Awayyar fire balloon field in Taunggyi, Shan State, on Thursday, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said, “There must be development and peace first. Then it is very important to draft a constitution that is accepted by all and is supportive of the federal union. We are trying to implement the promises to the people step-by-step,” she said.

The holding of three sessions of the Panglong Conference last year shows the government’s commitment to rule of law, she said, adding that participants had agreed on 51 points of the federal union.

“Peace, tranquillity, political stability and development for people cannot be separated. If there is peace, we can bring development to the people. We need a constitution that is accepted by the people to achieve peace. There should be reconciliation among our people,” she said.

In addition, the first step to amending the constitution is being taken in parliament, she said.

“We are making our utmost effort to fulfil our campaign promises. But we alone cannot make much progress. The public’s cooperation is crucial. Let’s try with all our might and main to develop the long-awaited true democratic nation that was first sowed on Shan State Day,” Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said.

“For over 70 years of internal conflict to come to an end, it is crucial to build a federal democratic nation that guarantees democracy, national equality and ethnic opportunities,” President U Win Myint stated in his formal message on Shan State Day.

“All ethnic people are strongly urged to cooperate in the successful building of a true federal democratic nation based on the Panglong spirit, which serves everyone with justice, liberty, equality and self-determination, he said in the message.
