Maungdaw district deputy
law officer U Hla Myint was recently summoned by the military council to
examine if he was involved with the Arakan Army (AA) anyways.
A person close to the Maungdaw law office informed Narinjara News that
Hla Myint was accordingly examined by the junta authority. He was
brought to the Nakaka (5) based border police station on 19 July and
later was released next day.
“On Wednesday, he was summoned to the border police station where the
military operation commander functions. He was released yesterday,” he
stated, adding that Hla Myint is about 50 years old and a respected
Rakhine national.
Locals allege that the military council has unnecessarily targeted a
responsible employee on suspicion of being linked to the AA, while both
sides have been maintaining a ceasefire since 26 November 2022.
“Now even the government employees are worried after the incident.
Everyone can be arrested anytime if the junta authority suspects, this
is the situation here,” they asserted.
But it’s not the first time in Maungdaw where a government official is summoned by the junta authority for questioning.
On 16 October 2022, U Chit Htoo Khaing, chairman of Karuna network
social association, along with its treasurer U Hla Thein and two other
persons (U Tun Lin Kyaw, the owner of KNN water purifier and U Maung
Byu, a resident of Maungdaw) faced a case under section 17(1)/(2) of the
unlawful association act at Maungdaw city police station.
Hla Thein and Tun Lin Kyaw were arrested in the middle of October last
year, but the others (Chit Htoo Khaing and Maung Byu) remain
absconding.
