More than 400 Rohingya have been detained in Pathein Prison, in Ayeyarwady Region since the February 2021 military coup, according to sources in the legal professions. The arrested Rohingya came from Rakhine State's Kyauktaw, Buthidaung, Sittwe, Rathaedaung and Maungdaw townships. They were apprehended trying to use waterways to illegally enter Ayeyarwady Region, which borders Rakhine State.
According to sources from the legal professions after the Rohingya were captured the junta filed charges against them under the Registration Act and sentenced them to prison terms ranging from two to five years.
One of the sources said: "Due to the fierce conflicts in Rakhine State, many Rohingya people tried to enter other regions and states illegally. The majority of them were arrested and sentenced to long prison terms.”
He also said that ethnic Rakhine guides who were helping the Rohingya get into Ayeyarwady Region were also arrested and sentenced to 17 months in Pathein Prison under human trafficking charges.
Ro Nay San Lwin, a co-founder of the Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC) said that since the coup the junta has arrested about 1,000 Rohingya entering Ayeyarwady Region.
