The Kingdom’s statement was delivered by Minister Plenipotentiary Wajdi Hassan Muharram, chairman of the Fourth Committee of the Kingdom’s permanent delegation to the United Nations, during the General Assembly meeting on a draft resolution on the situation in Myanmar.
NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia on Saturday affirmed its firm position in support of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and voted to abstain from a resolution moved at the UN General Assembly on the situation in Myanmar.
The General Assembly adopted a resolution that called on all member states to prevent the flow of arms into Myanmar.
The Kingdom’s statement was delivered by Minister Plenipotentiary Wajdi Hassan Muharram, chairman of the Fourth Committee of the Kingdom’s permanent delegation to the United Nations, during the General Assembly meeting on a draft resolution on the situation in Myanmar.
Muharram called for ensuring the safety and security of Rohingya Muslims and recognition of their basic rights, including the right to full citizenship and the provision of favorable conditions for voluntary, safe and dignified return, and granting them full citizenship rights in order to reintegrate them into society in the country.
Referring to the Kingdom’s decision to abstain from voting on the resolution, Muharram, clarified that the Kingdom's delegation drew attention to the lack of clarity on the progress of negotiations from the sponsors of the resolution. It also sought to find a balanced formula that takes into account the concerns of all countries with regard to the crisis.
“The draft resolution omitted some demands and points at the expense of others, by failing to sufficiently and clearly shed light on the humanitarian crisis suffered by the Rohingya Muslim minority and other minorities in Myanmar,” he said.
He pointed out that it cannot be ignored that the current political crisis in Myanmar has exacerbated the dire humanitarian situation faced by the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar, and thus reducing the possibility of their safe return from the scattered camps.
Muharram reiterated that from this point of view, the delegation of the Kingdom and other countries called on the sponsors of the resolution to include a reference to this persecuted group in the working paragraphs to reflect through them the seriousness of the humanitarian situation of refugees.
“The delegation of my country calls on Myanmar to assume its responsibility towards the Rohingya Muslim minority and immediately end all acts of violence and all violations of international humanitarian law. We also request that all necessary measures be taken to bring justice to the victims and put an end to impunity for all those involved in violating international humanitarian law,” he added.
