Biden executive order repeals Trump travel ban

President Biden rescinded the Trump administration's travel ban against citizens from seven countries just hours after being sworn into office.

Biden on Wednesday afternoon repealed the first executive order that former President Donald Trump signed upon arriving at the White House in January 2017. The move was one of 17 reversals aimed at altering policies Trump put into effect.

That ban on travel affected countries in northern Africa and the Middle East: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, and Sudan. It was the first of three the Trump administration would set into action on the basis that those countries did not adequately vet travelers headed to the United States.

The initial version was blocked by a lower court ruling, but the third one was allowed by the Supreme Court. Since then, people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen were not allowed to travel to the U.S. In addition, travel from North Korea and Venezuela was also reined in.

Last January, the White House said it would block permanent immigration, or the issuing of green cards, to citizens of Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania.

The move was dubbed by some as a "Muslim ban" because most of the countries had large Muslim populations. Trump said as a presidential candidate in December 2015 that the U.S. should impose a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on," in reference to the San Bernardino, California, shooting. He later said it was not meant to target people who practice Islam.
