The United Kingdom on Wednesday stressed the need for keeping the Rohingya issues alive on the international platforms including the UN Security Council for mounting pressure on Myanmar for ensuring repatriation of the members of the community to Rakhine.

‘Myanmar must remain on the agenda’ of the UNSC and likeminded countries would require to work together on the matter, British high commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson said in a talk held on a web platform with Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh in Dhaka.

He said the situation in Rakhine ‘is not very encouraging’ for return of Rohingya people as the Myanmar armed forces and the Arakan Army are engaged in conflicts.

‘There has been no serious effort’ from the Myanmar government to implement the Kofi Annan Commission report on creating conducive environment for peace in Rakhine, he said stressing the need for ensuring citizenship for Rohingya people and accountability for atrocity crimes committed in Rakhine.

On making available COVID-19 vaccine, he stressed the need for ensuring equitable access to vaccine for all countries.

The British government would also consider Bangladesh, a country with 165 million people, among the priority countries for signing post-Brexit free trade agreement, he added.

The high commissioner also indicated that his government would have no objection to granting visa to opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia for her treatment in the United Kingdom.

There would be ‘no objection’ if she applies for visa, the British high commissioner said replying to a question. ‘The decision would be for the ministers, who would take into account factors including that many of her close family members live in the UK,’ he said.

The government on September 3 suspended sentences of former prime minister Khaleda Zia in two cases for six more months on conditions that she would not go abroad.

DCAB president Angur Nahar Monty moderated the session.
