Rescued people to be sent to Bhashan Char, says the foreign minister
Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard have rescued an unspecified number of Rohingyas from the sea near Teknaf in Cox's Bazar.
The rescued are from the two Rohingya-carrying boats that have been trying to enter Bangladeshi waters from International waters for about 12 days, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.
He, however, could not specify the exact number of Rohingyas.
Dr Momen said the rescued will not be sheltered in the camps in Cox's Bazar, rather they will be sent to Bhashan Char in Noakhali, which was developed by Bangladesh Navy to relocate 100,000 Rohingyas from the settlements.
He also said that from now on the newly arrived Rohingyas will be sent to Bhashan Char.
These Rohingyas will be the first residents of the island.
"I've heard that they (Rohingyas) came close to shores by small boats from the two trawlers. After being alerted by the locals, they were picked up from the boats by the coast guard personnel," said the foreign minister.
"I cannot tell you the exact number. But, I have heard that about 60 Rohingyas have been rescued and search is on to find others," he said.
The process of placing the rescued in coronavirus quarantine was going as of filing the report at 10:30pm, an official concerned told Dhaka Tribune.
Bangladesh has been under pressure from the United Nations and the international community to allow the two boats carrying about 500 Rohingyas.
